Craven Idols - may the biggest freak win.

The long national nightmare has ended.

Kevin has been booted from American Idol. Frankly, we're all surprised he made it this long - he sings like, well, a sixteen year old who has no experience, and therefore, absolutely *no* concept of what he's actually singing. His performances made me cringe, sadly.

It is, however, a contest of quirks this year. In a perfect world, it would come down to Mandisa and penis-head boy (Chris?), but there are really no guarantees that they will be the final two. Contrary to Simon's statements (right before Paula tried to beat him up, but couldn't actually keep her balance long enough to stand), this contest is *not* about the singing.

That explains why Kevin made it this long; he shouldn't have made it past round two, but young people with a modicum of talent are much more exciting than older people with lots of talent (for example, has anyone seen anything much of Charlotte Church, lately? She's actually become a better singer as her voice matured, but she's no longer 12, so no-one cares).

People *love* freaks. It's not enough to be good; the public's insatiable appetite for new and exciting things means that people with massive amounts of talent are simply boring. It's the ones with physical or personality quirks that stand out.

Speaking of personality quirks, I think Kellie Pickler is faking it; anyone who is really that stupid wouldn't make it past their tenth year without being eaten by wolves. And didn't you *love* Barry Manilow's absolutely straight-faced snark at her? Hysterical. I find her massively annoying and a wart on the good name of Southern women everywhere, but the audience just loves her freaky stupidity/naivete.

I'm just amazed she hasn't fallen under a bus yet.

BTW, I've made a few more updates in the Attack Laurel section of my site.
