Mousehole

some pics of the new jacket are up on my site; the Network Solutions has changed the urls for the site (this is a good thing, if inconvenient in the short term), so your old bookmarks may not work (all the Google hits are screwed, I know that). Also, there are new pics in the Elizabethan and Extreme galleries, but they're just better pics and addendums to what's already there.

Check the Updates page. You know.

The last week has been lovely, if rather physically demanding - we were down at the house for Mousehole, and it went very well despite sunburns, blisters from fireworks, ticks, baby vultures throwing up, and other sundry events that had very little to do with the event.

Vic came down and did some costume photography for me, and also got to immortalize the baby vultures, who demonstrated their sheer delight at her presence by throwing up their last meal while hissing madly. The parents have become a little bolder, and now they stay in the trees nearby to watch over their little ones. They grunt when they're disturbed, and we got grunted at in a very decisive way that seemed to say "you hurt them, we eat your entrails".

The event itself went great - the weather was perfect, both on the day, and before and after, ensuring that no-one had to pack out with sopping canvas, despite threats of rain. We had skirmishing in the woods, a brawl (which was utterly epic, and I cannot do it justice in print), lots of healing potions and mouse teeth, games in the tavern, and a splendid meal.

I love Elizabethan events - everything is on the same page time-wise, and it's easy enough to turn a blind eye to the things that don't quite fit in when everyone is making the effort to behave and speak in a semi-period manner. Don't get me wrong, I like the SCA, but it's just a different level of play. For one thing, no-one's trying to legislate all the fun and risk out of existence - if you run into a tree, you run into a tree.

I guess everyone is in the same mindset - since there's nothing to win and no awards to be gained, it doesn't matter who wins as long as there's a great story at the end, and everyone had fun.

I'm not sure that's possible in the SCA, but it is possible in Gardiner's, because we want it to be - no-one gets mad when they lose.
